Common questions

What should I know before buying a large plant?

A big plant needs more planning than a small one. It needs a pot heavy or wide enough not to tip, a spot out of the walkway and room to grow upward. Large pots dry out slowly, so check the soil with a finger before you water instead of following a calendar. The height is the mature size in our plant library, and indoors many plants stay shorter.

What are the most popular large indoor plants?

Fiddle-leaf fig, rubber plant, Monstera, Kentia palm and bird of paradise are on this list and are listed at 150 cm (59 in) or more when mature. Choose by the light at the spot first, then by your pets.

How do I stop a tall plant from tipping over?

Use a heavy pot with a wide base and keep the plant out of walkways and drafts. Tall plants lean toward the light, so turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two to keep the stem upright.

Are large indoor plants safe for cats and dogs?

Some are. Kentia palm and parlor palm have ASPCA non-toxic records, while Monstera, rubber plant and fiddle-leaf fig are toxic to cats and dogs. Each card shows the verdict. A plant with no ASPCA record stays unknown and is never shown as safe.
