When to water
Watering demand rises during hot, dry, sunny spells. In winter, cold wet compost can rot roots, so a potted plant may need shelter from heavy rainfall.
How to water thoroughly
- Apply water directly to the soil or compost above the root zone and continue until it escapes through the drainage hole.
- Use a container at least 30 cm wide and deep with plenty of drainage holes. The compost must not remain waterlogged.
Signs of too much or too little water
Persistently wet compost, especially in winter, is a warning condition because it can cause rosemary roots to rot and die. Dry compost during hot weather is the opposite check before watering. A yellow or brown leaf alone does not prove a watering cause.
