   When to water

   Water new rosemary during dry spells in its first year. For established plants in containers, water during dry spells when the potting mix can dry out quickly in hot, dry, sunny weather.

   Watering demand rises during hot, dry, sunny spells. In winter, cold wet potting mix can rot roots, so a potted plant may need shelter from heavy rainfall.

   How to water thoroughly

   Apply water directly to the soil or potting mix above the root zone and continue until it escapes through the drainage hole.

   Use a container at least 30 cm (12 in) wide and deep with plenty of drainage holes. The potting mix must not remain waterlogged.

   Signs of too much or too little water

   Persistently wet potting mix, especially in winter, is a warning condition because it can cause rosemary roots to rot and die. Dry potting mix during hot weather is the opposite check before watering. A yellow or brown leaf alone does not prove a watering cause.
