What to inspect

For a potted plant in active growth, water when the upper 1/2 inch of potting medium has dried, then keep the medium evenly damp rather than saturated.

What changes it

Water regularly while leaves actively grow, taper after flowers fade, withhold water during the approximately 8–10 week indoor rest, and restart when new growth begins.

How to water thoroughly

  1. After potting, water thoroughly once the medium is set, then adjust watering to the growth stage. Reduce watering after flowering and resume it when a rested bulb returns to warm, bright conditions.
  2. Use a container with a drainage hole and a well-drained medium. Persistently wet conditions increase the risk of bulb or root rot.

Persistently wet medium or a bulb showing mold or mildew calls for a growing-condition check. Natural leaf browning can also accompany the planned dormant stage.
