How to propagate Venus fly trap

Use ripe seed or a division from a large established Dionaea muscipula clump. A clump with at least four crowns is large enough to divide. A detached trap or random leaf is not an equivalent starting piece.

At home, sow seed or divide a mature clump. Divide only a large clump with at least four crowns. Leaf cuttings and tissue culture are not covered here.

Keep propagation material in acidic specialist medium, bright light and wet container conditions. Use rainwater or distilled water, not hard tap water or ordinary fertilized potting mix.

For division, separate a crown-bearing portion from a large clump and pot it into the specialist medium. For seed, sow it under the same carnivorous-plant conditions and keep the medium wet.

A piece with its own crown is ready to separate. Seedlings and divisions settle in at different speeds, and a closing trap does not prove the new plant has rooted.

Dry media, unsuitable water or a division taken from a clump too small to separate are reasons to stop and review the setup. These signs do not explain every failed plant.

Keep new divisions or seedlings bright and consistently damp in the specialist medium, and water them only with rainwater or distilled water. Once they have settled in, give them the cooler seasonal rest.

Use clean containers and tools, and buy nursery-propagated stock rather than collecting Dionaea muscipula from the wild.
