How to water a jade plant

   When to water

   Let the potting mix dry between waterings. When it is dry, water thoroughly, then wait until it dries again before the next watering.

   Water moderately during spring and summer growth and reduce watering from fall through late winter. Water very sparingly while the plant is dormant.

   How to water thoroughly

   When the mix is dry, water thoroughly or deeply, then let excess drain. Avoid repeated small splashes that leave part of the root ball dry.

   Use a well-drained cactus or succulent mix and do not leave Crassula ovata standing in water. Wet, poorly drained mix and overwatering cause problems for this plant.

   Signs of too much or too little water

   Extended overwatering can lead to leaf fall, root rot, or stem rot. Insufficient water can produce shriveling and may also contribute to leaf drop, so inspect the mix and tissue rather than treating leaf loss as one cause.
