   Best soil mix

   Use a cactus or succulent-style medium with plenty of mineral, aerating material so water does not remain trapped around the jade plant’s roots. Dense ordinary garden soil is not a suitable default for a pot.

   The pot must drain freely and should never sit in collected water. Slow-draining mix or frequent watering can cause stem and root rot in jade plants.

   Match the mix to the pot and setting

   This soil decision is for an indoor container-grown jade plant, even though Crassula ovata can grow outdoors in suitable climates. Outdoor ground soil and a small room pot do not have the same drainage volume or drying behavior.

   Soil pH

   Crassula ovata tolerates acid, alkaline or neutral pH. Focus on drainage and air around the roots rather than a narrow pH target.

   When soil alone is not the problem

   A soil label alone cannot predict the watering interval: pot size, light, temperature, root condition, and the mix’s actual drying speed still decide when to water. No single recipe suits every jade plant.
