Use a cactus or succulent-style medium with plenty of mineral, aerating material so water does not remain trapped around the jade plant’s roots. Dense ordinary garden soil is not a suitable default for a pot.

The pot must drain freely and should never sit in collected water. Wisconsin links slow-draining mix or frequent watering with stem and root rot in jade plants.
