Light needs for a ZZ plant

   Best position and light

   Bright indirect light is the general indoor target. Zamioculcas zamiifolia tolerates low or deep shade, but lower light can slow growth or alter form.

   Choose indirect light. A windowless office needs fluorescent or other grow lights. Filter or avoid strong afternoon sun. No fixed lamp, distance or window direction applies to every room.

   Seasonal light changes

   Growth may slow as winter light drops. Keep indirect placement and avoid a sudden move into harsh sun. An eastern winter exposure can be an exception, but it is not a universal seasonal rule.

   Signs the light may be wrong

   Too much light may whiten or curl foliage before yellow or brown damage appears. Stems may bend away from light. Very low light usually shows as slower growth. Water, rhizome, temperature and pest issues can look similar.

   Limits of this light guide

   Shade tolerance does not make every dark corner as good as bright indirect light, and strong direct sun can scorch leaves. Watch the leaves and adjust the spot.
