How to repot a ZZ plant

   When to repot

   Inspect the pot when roots or rhizomes fill its available volume, roots emerge from drainage holes or growth is restricted. Increase pot size as the rhizomes grow.

   Use active growth, typically spring or early summer, as the general repotting window. This is not a ZZ-specific month or an automatic task for a stable plant.

   Choosing the next pot

   Move a root-filled ZZ into a container only modestly larger than the existing root mass, about one to two inches wider.

   How to repot

   Lift the plant and inspect the rhizome and roots, use fresh well-drained medium, and keep the plant at its previous depth. Do not bury the rhizome deeper as part of potting up.

   After repotting

   Preserve the ZZ’s free-draining conditions and avoid standing water while the new container settles. Its water-storing rhizomes make a wet mix a greater concern than a fixed post-repot timetable.
