   When to water

   Water when the airy bark medium is nearly dry and the roots look silvery rather than green, while preventing the roots from remaining soggy.

   Let light, temperature, humidity, bark condition, and root growth change the watering interval. Cooler, lower-light winter conditions generally slow the cycle.

2. 02

   How to water thoroughly

   Check the bark and roots, water thoroughly enough to wet the medium, and keep water out of the crown between the leaves. Let excess water drain before returning the pot to its place, and blot any water left in the crown with a paper towel.

   Use an airy bark-based orchid medium and a container that lets water leave freely. Do not leave the roots sitting in stagnant water.

   Signs of too much or too little water

   Wrinkled leaves or dry, shriveled roots can signal too little water or root damage, while roots that stay wet increase the risk of decline. Inspect bark and roots before changing the routine.
