How to water Ficus elastica

Check the top few centimeters of mix before watering Ficus elastica. When that layer has dried slightly, water the root zone thoroughly and let excess leave the drainage holes.

When to water

What to inspect

Let the top few centimeters of soil dry slightly before watering again. Use that dry-down cue rather than a fixed weekly interval, and do not let the whole root ball stay bone dry for prolonged periods.

What changes it

Water sparingly in winter. During dormancy from fall to late winter, watering may reduce or stop. Resume the more active routine only as growth and light increase.

How to water thoroughly

  1. Wet the root zone thoroughly, then let excess water leave through the drainage holes and empty the saucer. No universal volume is established for every pot.
  2. Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-drained houseplant mix. Retained water and frequent watering can damage roots or yellow leaves, but drainage does not replace the plant’s moderate watering preference.

Signs of too much or too little water

Warning Signs

Yellowing, leaf loss, soil that stays wet or brown roots call for a water and drainage review. Too little water, low light, cold drafts and overwatering can produce different signs. A yellow or dropped leaf alone does not identify one cause.
