   When to water

   Keep Gardenia jasminoides mix evenly damp during active growth, but do not let it stay waterlogged or dry completely. Use root-zone condition rather than a fixed calendar.

   Water more consistently through spring and summer growth and reduce only as light and growth fall, while avoiding a dry winter root ball. Plants moved outdoors in warm weather can dry faster.

   How to water thoroughly

   Water the root mix thoroughly and let excess drain. Return to watering when the mix has started to dry. Use rainwater when possible in hard-water areas to preserve acidity.

   Use an acidic container mix that stays damp but drains well, and empty any cover or saucer that leaves roots saturated. Gardenia roots need air as well as water.

3. 03

   Signs of too much or too little water

   Wilting with dry mix points first to water loss. Wilting in damp mix should prompt a check of roots, drainage, heat, and humidity. Yellowing or bud drop can overlap with water and root causes.
