   Plant names and labels

   Gardenia jasminoides is also known as Gardenia augusta and Gardenia florida. Use the name Gardenia jasminoides only for that species, not for the broader Gardenia genus. Do not identify an unnamed plant as a particular cultivar from the common name alone.

   Gardenia jasminoides is the main flowering houseplant gardenia, and named selections such as ‘Kleim’s Hardy’ and ‘Crown Jewel’ grow alongside the species. This group covers houseplant gardenias, not every Gardenia species or hybrid.

   How the varieties differ

   Gardenia jasminoides grows to about 1 to 1.5 m (3⁠–⁠5 ft), while named selections such as ‘Kleim’s Hardy’ and ‘Crown Jewel’ stay about 0.5 to 1 m (1.6⁠–⁠3.3 ft). That size difference changes the practical choice for a windowsill or container.

   Care differences

   The named selections share the same indoor care: bright indirect light, warmth, humidity, acidic potting mix that stays evenly damp without waterlogging, and spring repotting. Compact size mainly changes space and container planning. Water and feed them the same way.
