Which should you choose?
Snake plant
Choose Snake Plant if you want more variety — it comes in dozens of cultivars (Sansevieria 'Moonshine', 'Laurentii', dwarf 'Hahnii') and its upright form fits narrow shelves and corners well.
ZZ plant
Choose ZZ Plant if your space is particularly dim or you travel frequently — its bulbous rhizomes store even more water than the Snake plant's thick leaves, giving it a slight edge for long stretches without care.

Which is better for a dark room — Snake Plant or ZZ Plant?
Both are excellent in low light. The ZZ plant's waxy, highly reflective leaves are particularly efficient at capturing dim light, giving it a marginal edge in very dark spots. That said, both will survive in near-darkness — just grow more slowly.
How long can these plants go without water?
Both can go 4–6 weeks without water in normal indoor conditions, and longer if temperatures are cool. The ZZ plant's rhizomes are the largest water reserves of any common houseplant — it's genuinely hard to kill by underwatering.
Are Snake Plant and ZZ Plant safe for cats?
No — both are toxic to cats and dogs. If you need a low-light plant that is pet-safe, consider the Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) or Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) — both tolerate low light and are non-toxic.
