What to inspect

Check the top 5 cm of compost and water Dracaena fragrans only when that layer is dry. Wet the root ball, then allow excess to leave the pot.

What changes it

Keep the dry-top-layer check year-round, but expect demand to fall in dark, cool winter conditions. Keep the plant away from cold drafts and hot radiators that can stress foliage.

How to water thoroughly

  1. Use room-temperature rainwater or filtered water where possible. Hard tap water can neutralize the slightly acidic medium, and fluoride can damage foliage.
  2. Keep compost from staying wet and never leave the container standing in water. Repeated saturation can rot roots even when the upper layer needs checking.

If brown tips or dying leaves appear, recheck wetness, water source, direct sun, dry air, cold drafts, and radiator heat before adding water. A brown tip alone does not tell you to water.
