   When to water

   During active growth, water Chamaedorea elegans when the upper layer of potting mix is beginning to dry. Water freely enough to wet the root ball without leaving it saturated.

   Water less often in winter as growth slows and cooler conditions are tolerated. Return to the active-growth pattern only when light, temperature, and growth support it.

   How to water thoroughly

   Water the potting mix evenly and let excess drain. Use rainwater where possible if hard tap water is causing alkaline conditions, rather than using a fixed calendar amount.

   Use a free-draining peat-free medium and a pot with drainage holes. Persistent waterlogging or heavy potting mix can lead to root rot, even though the pot should be watered evenly during growth.

   Signs of too much or too little water

   Brown tips can follow too little water, dry air, hard tap water, or direct sun. Yellowing, collapse, or persistently wet potting mix calls for a root and drainage check.
