How to prune a Christmas cactus

   Choose what to remove

   Target selected lengths of segmented stem or chain, making the cut at a joint or leaf-segment junction.

   Shortening long chains keeps the plant compact and can encourage branching or a more concentrated flowering display. Routine pruning is not required for Schlumbergera truncata health.

   Prune at the right time

   Prune after the active growth cycle and before flower buds are set. Timing ranges from no later than mid-summer to late summer or early September, depending on the plant’s timing.

   Make one clean cut

   Shorten only the selected overlong chains at their joints, using a light one- to several-segment reduction or a cut at a two-leaf junction. Save healthy trimmings for propagation if desired.

   When pruning will not help

   Pruning is optional for health, and cutting after buds form can remove the coming display. An exact cultivar’s response and its distinction from Easter cactus or another holiday-cactus species remain identity-dependent.

   Care for the plant after pruning

   If trimmings are propagated, use short segments in sterile, well-drained medium and keep them lightly damp in bright indirect light until roots or new growth appear. This is cutting care, not a required routine for the parent plant.
