Aphids or whitefly
How to tell
Clusters of small green, black or white insects on new shoots and flower buds, or tiny white flies that lift off when you touch the plant. Both leave sticky honeydew.
The fix
Pinch or wipe aphids off the new shoots, then treat with an insecticidal soap made for houseplants, as its label directs. For whitefly, hang yellow sticky traps and treat the undersides of the leaves with the same product, repeating as its label directs until no more appear. Test the spray on one leaf and wait two days before treating the whole plant, and skip any plant the label warns against.
