How to water an English ivy

   When to water

   Let the top few centimeters (about an inch) of potting mix dry before watering, but do not let the whole root zone dry out completely. This is a container check, not a moisture-meter value or calendar interval.

   Recheck more often when a warm room or brighter position dries the potting mix faster, and water less often when light and growth fall. In winter, check the mix before each watering instead of following a set interval.

   How to water thoroughly

   Water after the surface check and let the container drain instead of watering by a fixed weekly schedule. Amount and frequency change with pot size, light, temperature and room conditions.

   Discard excess water and do not leave Hedera helix standing in a wet container or saucer.

   Signs of too much or too little water

   A completely dry root zone or a pot that stays wet after watering should trigger a container and root check. Warm, dry conditions can also raise the risk of spider-mite problems.
