   When to fertilize

   Feed soil-grown lucky bamboo monthly during the growing season. Feed water-grown plants every other month. These intervals belong to separate culture modes.

   Feed routinely from about April through October, while the soil schedule follows active growth. Dates vary with climate and room, so do not assume winter feeding continues.

   Fertilizer type and dose

   Use houseplant fertilizer for soil culture and a weak liquid houseplant fertilizer for water culture. No particular brand is needed. This advice is for lucky bamboo, not true bamboo.

   For water-grown Dracaena sanderiana, use one-quarter of the recommended fertilizer rate every other month. For soil-grown plants, follow the product label.

   When not to fertilize

   Overfeeding can damage roots. If yellowing or stem rot appears, check water, drainage and culture before adding fertilizer. A yellow leaf or weak stem does not prove nutrient deficiency.
