When to water
Withhold water during cold winter rest for about three to four months, then resume in spring as warmth and growth return. A warm, actively growing plant does not automatically follow the dormant branch.
How to water thoroughly
- Check the container medium and water to maintain a regular but not waterlogged condition, allowing the pot to drain. Match the next check to growth, light and temperature rather than a weekly calendar.
- Use a container and medium that do not remain waterlogged. Inspect the drainage path before increasing water. A swollen water-storing base does not make a saturated pot safe.
Signs of too much or too little water
Yellowing or leaf drop can accompany chilling, winter rest, overwatering or other stress. A persistently wet mix, soft caudex or declining roots calls for a drainage and root-zone check before more water.
