How to water an African violet

   When to water

   Let the surface of the African-violet mix dry before watering instead of keeping the pot constantly wet. Use room-temperature water.

   Use the dry-surface check in active spring and summer growth. During slower winter growth, water more cautiously instead of following the same calendar routine.

   How to water thoroughly

   Apply water around the root zone or from below so the leaves and crown stay dry, then let excess drain before returning the pot to its place. Bottom watering is an option, not a required method.

   Use a well-drained African-violet mix and do not leave the pot standing in water. A wet crown or persistently wet mix raises the risk of rot. Avoiding saturation does not mean leaving the root ball dry for long periods.

   Signs of too much or too little water

   A wet crown, soft tissue, or ongoing leaf damage calls for an inspection of how water reaches the plant. A dry root ball with limp foliage is a different moisture observation from saturated mix, so the signs do not choose one cause by themselves.
