Soil for a golden pothos

   Best soil mix

   Mix three parts peat-free ericaceous mix, one part grit and one part medium-sized orchid bark. A peat-free houseplant potting mix can work, but this mix stays more open. No branded product is needed.

   The mix should hold some water while remaining open and well drained, and the container should release excess water. Overpotting can leave the potting mix wet for too long and raise root-rot risk.

   Match the mix to the pot and setting

   The recipe is for a warm indoor climbing or trailing houseplant grown in a container, with repotting into a slightly larger pot when roots crowd the current one. It is not meant for garden soil.

   Soil pH

   Epipremnum prefers a slightly acidic potting mix, which ericaceous mix gives. Avoid watering regularly with hard tap water, which can change the acidity.

   When soil alone is not the problem

   Treat the ratio as a starting point, not a fixed formula. Pot size, root density, watering habits and the plant’s growth form decide whether the mix stays open without drying too quickly.
