How to propagate by offsets / pups
Friendship plant produces offsets: smaller plants that sprout from the base of the mother plant. A large offset often has roots of its own, but not always, so check before you pot it up.
- 01
Wait until an offset is at least one-third the size of the mother plant. Removing offsets too early increases the chance of failure.
- 02
Water the parent plant the day before to ease root removal.
- 03
Slide the plant out of its pot and gently brush away soil to find where the offset connects to the mother root.
- 04
Pull or cut the offset away cleanly, keeping as many of its own roots intact as possible. For cacti, use clean gloves and tongs.
- 05
If the offset was cut, let the wound dry and callus before planting. Cactus offsets often need about two days, and larger wounds may take longer. Judge the dry, sealed surface rather than the clock.
- 06
Pot the offset into fresh, well-draining mix appropriate to the species. Water lightly and place in indirect light.
- 07
A rooted offset usually shows new growth within 2–4 weeks as it settles in. An offset without roots has to root first: keep the mix barely damp and give it several weeks before you expect new growth.

Division
Division multiplies friendship plant by splitting the root ball in spring, so each section has its own roots and shoots. The new plants settle in quickly because they already have a mature root system.
- 01
Water the plant thoroughly the day before dividing: well-hydrated roots are more resilient.
- 02
Slide the plant gently out of its pot. If it’s stuck, run a knife around the inside edge.
- 03
Shake off the loose potting mix to expose the root system. For clumping plants, you’ll see distinct crowns or growing points.
- 04
Tease the clumps apart by hand where possible. For tightly bound roots, use a clean sharp knife or pruning shears. Each section needs at least one healthy shoot and a decent portion of roots.
- 05
Pot each division into fresh, well-draining potting mix at the same depth it was growing before.
- 06
Water gently, then keep the divisions out of strong direct sun for 1–2 weeks while they settle. Skip fertilizer for the first month.
- 07
New growth is the sign that the plant has adjusted. After 4–6 weeks, resume normal care.

Common questions
What is the best way to propagate friendship plant?
The most reliable method for friendship plant (Pilea involucrata) is offsets / pups. It’s an easy process that beginners can handle well.
When should I propagate friendship plant?
The best time is spring to summer, when the plant is actively growing and roots form most quickly.
How long does it take friendship plant to root?
A rooted offset usually settles in within 2–4 weeks. An offset that came away without roots has to root first, which takes several weeks longer.
Propagation guidance is based on genus-level horticultural knowledge. Individual specimens can vary.
